Quick talk w. Cassie The Organizer.
Cassie, why is it it important to bring these damn kids to the city?
Seeing a modern city is important because many of these kids have never left their towns before, not even to go into nearby Kunming. Coming here will widen their realities. Visiting universities, colleges and the traveling it self are things they’ve only heard about. Now they will become actual tangible possibilities.
Will it be like visiting the future?
Maybe, probably. Ask them when they come.
Why specifically Beijing?
The historical sites of Beijing creates even more importance to them, because it’s the cultural hub for Chinese people, and has an emotional significance to the kids as well as the universities exposes better options for their futures. They will visit Da bei and Peking university here.
What Kind of place is Kun Ming?
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, in South West China. It’s a small industrial town, about 1 hour by bus from Beijing. A street from where I live has a lot of construction coming through… The kids over there lives pretty quiet lives.
What will the do here?
The kids will be traveling to great sights like the Tian An Men Square and The Great Wall of China. Also different Universities like Bei Da and Peking University, to explore the corridors, classrooms, libraries and surroundings. We will do cultural food trips since most of them has never even seen a hamburger or Northern Chinese food. It will be a lot of fun for sure.
How will they be kept safe and fed?
Since we are bringing 12 kids to a city where they have never been, a city so different from what they are used to, we are 4 adults in total. I am one of these adults, the others are teachers they know and are comfortable with.
Where will they stay?
They will stay at a hotel or hostel that’s comfortable enough. Warm and comfy, but no marble floors and oil paintings, nor room service needed. We don’t have anything booked yet, since we don’t know what our budget is. Ask me again after the fund raiser.
What if one gets food poisoned?
Naturally if it’s really bad, one adult will take the poor kid to the hospital. If it’s not super bad, one adult will stay home with so she / he can rest and get better.
Can I come a long some day and take pictures, as a follow up to our donors?
